It’s estimated that in sub-Saharan Africa, only 1 in 10 children with disabilities are in school. Teachers rarely have training on how to include children with disabilities in class, and classrooms and schools are often not accessible. That means these children are much more likely to drop out of school than their peers. This compounds with pre-existing stigmas to cut off the opportunity to fully participate in society.

When a class is taught using playful activities, it’s easier to adapt lessons to include children with disabilities. Games break lessons down into their basic principles and give children different ways to approach learning those lessons. It’s perfect for children with different abilities, because each can find the best way for them to grasp the underlying ideas. Children who play learn to identify and build on what they are good at, rather than defining themselves by their disabilities. Playing also gives them the opportunity to learn confidence, connect with others, and discover their strengths.
