When Sirenie Took the Field, Girls Followed
In Sirenie’s community in Burundi, girls who played football were often criticized and discouraged. Many believed sport was only for boys and feared girls who played would damage their reputations. Despite these pressures, Sirenie continued playing with the support of her mother. Today, through Right To Play’s Sports Protect – Kukivi project, supported by the Olympic Refuge Foundation, Sirenie has become a community coach. She now mentors younger children and inspires more girls to step onto the field, proving that sport can open doors to confidence, leadership, and opportunity.
